On a recent trip to Southern California, I packed up the Phantom 3 Professional and brought it out there with me for the week. I ended up getting a few great shots while I was there. The terrain is so much different than the mid-west. It’s really flat here in Iowa, so when I have the chance to explore the mountains or the beaches from the air – I can’t pass it up! This shot was from the Amtrak construction underway, reconstructing the bridge through the lagoon near Torrey Pines. The rail line is still active, as a few trains went by me that afternoon. I tried to get some shots of the train, but it just didn’t work out that day.
Some of my aerials made it to the Des Moines Register this week! The city has been working on this connector since we moved here over a year ago. We’re looking forward to the convenience of hitting I-80 only minutes away from our home; we are not looking forward to the increase in traffic, but oh well. This area will be home to the new Kettlestone development – Retail shopping, apartments, overall major expansion in our little town of Waukee :
Here are a few of my aerials taken last week during the concrete pouring:
Here’s some video from that day.
We drove a couple of hours north to Mason City Iowa a couple of weekends ago, for the Mason City airshow. It was a really cool event, complete with helicopter rides (a cobra and a huey), a P-51, and a large collection of other vintage planes on display. Our friends invited us and we had VIP airfield access, so it was a once-in-a-lifetime event for sure.
We’ve heard about this Balloon Festival for quite some time, and we finally made it down last night. Des Moines is full of really cool events, but this one was at the top of the list. A few thousand people turned out for the “light the night” portion of the week long event. After sundown, the balloons all gather and light things up for the crowds of people. I have a lot of pictures to process, but got one finished last night to share. Stay tuned for some video as well – and try to make it if you’re in the area!
On our drive home from the Mason City Airshow last night, I had to pull off the I-35 to capture this stunning sunset. I’m going to need to dedicate a page to sunsets soon!
I was out last night shooting pictures with my Nikon and my quadcopter. Finally got some cool shots of the maturing corn in the neighborhood. It’s really taking off and it’s hard to describe to friends and family back home in California. I hope this picture does it justice! Also got some artsy shots down by the train tracks in Booneville / Van Meter Iowa. Here are a couple.
We attended another cool local event last weekend – Smokin in the Junction! There was a separate BBQ Competition that looked really cool. Unfortunately, it was blocked off to the public. It would have been nice to try some samples. The food carts were great and all, but the real stuff was in the competition area. They had a live band as well. We’ll probably do this again next year.
We get some amazing sunsets in Iowa. Maybe it’s the flat terrain, not a mountain in site for hundreds of miles. We get wind, rain, hail, thunder and lightning. You name it. It’s nice to be out of winter and into Spring; I wish my allergies could say the same though. We didn’t get seasons in San Diego, so this is all new to me and I’m loving it. This evening’s sunset – May 7, 2015
Some aerial footage from Waukee’s Easter Egg hunt this morning at Centennial Park!
